Thanks for downloading the DRIVE desktop theme for Windows. DRIVE is one of my favourite movies -- and I couldn't find a single theme on it anywhere! So I decided to make one. It took me about 5 hours to do -- and another 2 hours to type this README file. Anyway, every component is there, except a screensaver (I don't know how to make screensavers). I've also included extra wallpapers, sounds and icons.

This README file contains all the information you'll need to install the theme!! If you already know how to use themes, you can skip those parts of this file. This file is in HTML, so there are hyperlinks to many internet sites where you can download necessary programs if you don't have them. There is also information on the movie here. A Preview is shown here -- your desktop will look like this. This is a picture of my own desktop after I installed the theme.

REQUIREMENTS

1.   For Windows 95 users:
Windows 95 does not provide a facility to install themes -- you need Microsoft Plus! or another theme installer to do so. Many freeware/shareware programs are available on the internet if you don't have Plus! -- a good program is "Desktop Themes" by Jonathan Potter. It can be downloaded from Themes-n-Schemes (a site with lots of themes and freeware/shareware programs and utilities).
     For Windows 98 users:
Windows 98 has the features of Plus! built-in... so you needn't worry about it.

2.   A utility for unzipping compressed files. It must support long file names. For this, I suggest WinZip. You can download it from the WinZip Home Page.

3.   Your monitor must support a resolution of atleast 640 x 480 pixels. The theme looks best at 800 x 600. There must also be support for True Colour (16.7 million colours)

QUICK START (Assuming you are not new to using themes)

Just unzip all the contents of DRIVE.ZIP to a single folder (it doesn't matter which), and open your theme installer. Select drive.theme and say OK.

If you're using Microsoft Plus!, open the wallpaper "Drive Wallpaper 1.jpg" again in your web browser, and choose "Set as Wallpaper". This is because JPEG wallpapers in 16.7 million colours don't appear properly when applied through Plus!.

To install the startup shutdown screens, first make copies of your old logo files. The three files are:
C:\LOGO.SYS;  C:\WINDOWS\LOGOW.SYS;  C:\WINDOWS\LOGOS.SYS. Put them in a folder named "Old Logo files" or something like that, then move the logo files provided with this theme to the locations given above.
Restart your computer if you want to see the full effect of the theme.

DETAILED INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

The ZIP file DRIVE.ZIP contains all the components of this desktop theme. There are a few extra files as well. For the theme to work properly, the only requirement is that all the components must be in the same folder (it doesn't matter which one). Use your extracting utility to unzip all the files into a folder (you can put it in your usual themes folder).
If you're using Windows 98 or Microsoft Plus! with Windows 95, you just have to double click on the theme file, drive.theme. Then say OK to apply the theme. If you're using some other theme installer, open that program, and apply this the theme as you would apply your other themes.

If you're using Microsoft Plus!, open the wallpaper "Drive Wallpaper 1.jpg" again in your web browser, and choose "Set as Wallpaper". This is because JPEG wallpapers in 16.7 million colours don't appear properly when applied through Plus!.

Startup/Shutdown screens are provided with this theme. These are the screens that Windows shows when it is starting and shutting down (The Microsoft Windows logo;  "Please wait while your computer shuts down";  "It's now safe to turn off your computer"). The three files corresponding to these logos are; respectively;  C:\LOGO.SYS;  C:\WINDOWS\LOGOW.SYS;  C:\WINDOWS\LOGOS.SYS. If you want to install the DRIVE logo files, you must first make backup copies of your old logo files. Move the above mentioned files into a different directory, say, "Old Logo Files". Then move the logo files given with this theme into the locations mentioned above. Some theme installers do this automatically. It's best you make copies of the files first. Now your colours, sounds, icons, pointers and wallpaper should be changed. If you want to see the new startup/shutdown screens (if you installed them); restart your computer.

INSTALLING THE THEME MANUALLY

If you don't have the programs needed to install the theme, you can do it manually. It's a boring process, and the theme won't be installed as it is meant to be.
First, apply the wallpaper. You can open any one of the three wallpapers provided, in your web browser, and right-click on it. Choose "Set as Wallpaper".
Then, go to "My Computer" and open the Control Panel. Click on Sounds. Choose sounds for each event from the ones given in the theme. Then click on "Mouse", choose pointers, and choose the appropriate cursors from the ones given in this theme. If you don't have Plus! or some other program that can change your icons, you'll have to be content with your usual desktop icons. (You can change all your system icons with a software called Microangelo.) As for the colours and fonts, you'll have to choose your own. (If you're really willing to do it, you can open the drive.theme file in a text editor, copy the part of the file pertaining to colours and sizes of windows -- it's at the bottom of the theme file -- and paste it in the proper place in your WIN.INI file. If you understood what that meant, go ahead and do it if you want to -- otherwise just forget about it.) The best thing to do is applying a Wallpaper, sounds, cursors, and choosing your own colours and fonts.

ABOUT THIS THEME

This theme is based on the movie DRIVE. There are wallpapers, sounds, icons, static and animated cursors, and startup/shutdown screens provided with this theme. A complete list of the files is given below.

There are three wallpapers  -- 800 x 600 images, in True Colour. They were made with Paint Shop Pro using pictures from the internet. The sounds were recorded by me and edited with Gold Wave. The cursors and icons were made with Microangelo 98. This HTML document was made in Netscape Composer, and the preview image was taken by pressing the Print Screen key (takes a snapshot of your desktop - did you know that...?). That file was again modified in Paint Shop Pro. I used WinZip to compress the files.

The theme file was generated with "Desktop Themes".

This theme is freeware, and you can freely distribute it (put it on your webpage if you like), but please don't alter any files, and include this README file with it.

This movie is set in the near future (the year 2008). Toby Wong (Dacascos), an ex-government agent from Hong Kong, has a "bio-engine" implanted in his chest. It's a sophisticated piece of circuitry that speeds up his reflexes and gives him the ability to move extremely fast. Toby flees from Hong Kong, and comes to the United States - because there's an American Corporation that's willing to pay him five million dollars for the device. But he must get to Los Angeles if he is to sell the bio-engine. So he kidnaps Malik Brody (Kadeem Hardison), an out-of-work singer, so that he can take him to L.A. Meanwhile, the Leung Corporation (who created the bio-  engine) sends a professional assassin, Vic Madison (John Pyper-Ferguson) and his team to capture Toby. Things soon get even more complicated -- the Leung Corporation sends an "advanced model" Turbodrive (Masaya Kato) after Toby and Malik. There's plenty of action and lots of fun as Malik and Toby try to get to L.A.

Though it is not a big-budget action movie, DRIVE is very entertaining. In fact, it's better than a lot of big-budget action movies. I really enjoyed it, and that's why I've put together this desktop theme.
