		* * * THE PRISONER FILES * * *

The PRISONER FILES are designed to replace the following
Windows 95 system files:-

logo.sys This is the picture you see while Windows 95 is
loading, sometimes called the "splash" screen.

logow.sys	This is the picture you see as you shut Windows
		95 down.

logos.sys	This informs you that the shutdown procedure
is complete and it is now safe to turn off
		your computer.

The three relacement files have a "The Prisoner" theme and can
be used in place of the standard opening and closing
screens normally installed by Windows 95.

Always check for virus infection of any files downloaded from
the internet.

The Prisoner Files are designed for Windows 95 ONLY.

WHAT'S THE PROCEDURE?

Unzip the three Prisoner files into a temporary folder on
your hard disk. Make sure you understand which is which, the
names differ by only one letter and it's easy to confuse them.

Start Windows Explorer and open up your Windows main folder.
Locate the files logow.sys and logos.sys in this folder using
the "find" utility in the "tools" drop-down menu.

Click the logow.sys filename twice SLOWLY. A box should appear
round the name which will now be highlighted. Rename the file
logow.sys to logow.bak and press enter.

Repeat for the logos.sys file, renaming it logos.bak

Open the temporary folder where you unzipped the Prisoner files
and drag and drop the logow.sys and logos.sys files from this
folder into your Windows main folder.

Now drag and drop the remaining logo.sys file from the temporary
folder into your root directory (normally the "c" drive).

Installation is now complete. Test it by first shutting down the
computer, noting that you get an "EVACUATE" screen followed
by "FALLOUT". Then re-start and note you get an "ARRIVAL" screen
as Windows 95 re-loads.

*******************************************************************

If you ever wish to revert to your original startup and shutdown
screens, delete logow.sys and logos.sys in the main Windows folder
then rename logow.bak to logow.sys and logos.bak to logos.sys

Delete logo.sys in your root directory. The original logo.sys
file will automatically re-install itself.

FAQ's

Q. I've really screwed up. How do I repair the damage?

A. Put your Windows 95 CD in and start the install routine.
The programe will give you the option to repair files which have
been changed or corrupted, choose this - NOT a full re-install.
All your exisiting system settings will be preserved.

Q. I've installed the new screens but the quality of the image
isn't as good as the rest of the art I've downloaded from the
Prisoner Artwork page. Why is this?

A. It's due to the limitations in the way Windows 95 handles
and displays it's startup/shutdown images. What starts life as
a large, sharp highly detailed full colour picture gets squashed
down to a tiny 320 x 400 pixel 256 colour file which is then crudely
de-compressed and expanded to full screen size and dimensions each
time the computer starts or shuts down. Result - it gets blocky.
There's no way round it.

Q. So can I convert them to better quality for seperate viewing?

A. No, but the art is available from the Prisoner Artwork page for
seperate viewing in best quality. Use the JASC Media Centre to create
a slideshow with optional effects and music.
