File Upload Guidelines

Try our easy to use File Upload Form where you can specify the URL of a theme which is then automatically copied from the specified URL to the ThemeWorld server.

Uploads can also be put into ftp://ftp.themeworld.com/pub/uploads/themes and then simply dragging your file onto the Netscape window to start the upload.

If you use Internet Explorer 5, just type the FTP URL shown immediately above into the address bar (be sure to use ftp:// instead of http:// before the URL) and click Go or press Enter. Once you're connected to our uploads page, you can drag and drop files from your hard drive to ThemeWorld to upload.

Other useful upload URLs for FTP users are:

Uploading Guidelines
  • All archives must be ZIP files, so that users can download the files using web browsers without the trauma caused by the a_theme.exe archives. Some web browsers try to display the EXE file as text rather than saving to a file! If your theme is contained in a self-extracting archive, it should be encased in a ZIP file.

  • Previews: If you want your theme to be previewed, then do not use self-extracting archives even if you do enclose them in a ZIP file. (eg. theme.exe stored within theme.zip) Self-extracting archives are difficult and time-consuming for us to extract and download only the graphic elements without having to download the whole theme, often including big sound files. We may have to install the theme on our computers which we do not want to do with every theme. Here is an example of a suitable theme.

  • Don't use a filename that already exists in the archive unless you are updating that theme. If you are updating an existing theme, you must mention this in your .txt file. Do not modify themes created by other users. It is bad mannered to do so. If you have a theme which already exists, you can use a similar filename but make sure it is different.

  • Don't use capitals, especially the starting letter, or we'll end up with a split list in the INDEX. Make sure that your filename (not counting the .zip part) is no more than 8 characters long otherwise I will have to change the name of your ZIP file.

  • Upload a short description for inclusion in the INDEX file. For example, the text file should be called a_theme.txt if the theme file is called a_theme.zip. You no longer need send email to me when uploading a file.

  • If your upload fails for any reason, you can try again using the same filename but with a .new suffix added. For example, if your upload a theme using the filename a_theme.zip fails, use a_theme.zip.new and then a_theme.zip.new.new etc.

  • We reserve the right to change any filename that doesn't conform to the these guidelines.

Upload Missing?
If any of your uploads do not appear in the archive when the new batch of Latest Additions appear, then please be patient. The current method we use to update the site is to place all the contibutions into a queue and upload 5 themes per day. This way every theme will get their "Day of Glory" on the front page of ThemeWorld. If your uploaded file was corrupt then it will be deleted. You should always make sure that your contribution is complete and correct before uploading. Once uploaded, make sure that the file size on ThemeWorld for your file is the same as on your computer. This ensures that the upload was not corrupted in any way.
